it is possible only if the video provider is capable of rendering to
an RGB surface. Some video providers only support rendering to YUV
surfaces which are not provided by the vesa framebuffer.

You should also note that all rendering on vesa is done in software so
you will need a decent CPU to get smooth video playback.

please read the DirectFB README and configure your framebuffer as
suggested there.
