That's very interesting and I was looking into that already, too. I did some
plugin coding within VLC already and might be willing to help...

Also note, that there is a SDL backend for VLC and SDL can output to
DirectFB.

Regarding the user interface: I was looking into something which can also be
overlayed
onto the video in order to avoid the need for a separate (monitor) screen.

I'm not that experienced on the DirectFB side. On the VLC side, take a look
at the SDL output plugin.
